Shelter is an essential human need. Home ownership is a stepping stone to a family acquiring financial freedom and stability, as well as better health and security. Barriers to home ownership sometimes can seem impossible, and because of personal circumstances, some worthy families may never achieve this lifetime goal.
For the last several years, Rochester Homes has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Fulton County to provide homes for people in need. Habitat for Humanity believes that safe, decent housing is fundamental to lifting families out of poverty.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit Christian organization that works with volunteers and future homeowners, who put in sweat-equity hours to build, simple affordable housing.
This year’s project is a 27’.10” X 36’, 1,650-square–foot, four-bedroom, two-bath Cape Cod home that will be partially completed by Rochester Homes. Although unusual, the home’s interior was minimally finished in the Rochester Homes’ production facility so that volunteers and the future residents may contribute to completing the home.
Items needed to be completed on-site include installation of mechanical units, hook-up to septic and utilities, finished cabinetry, flooring, interior drywall and the finishing the electrical and plumbing.
Most of the finishing materials will be resourced by either the local Habitat ReStore or by a chain home improvement store at a discount.
If this home had been completed by a general contractor, the final cost would range between $125,000 and $150,000. The home is slated to be complete by the end of May.
