Oftentimes those in the building trade throw around building terms such as gable with little explanation. Gable roofs date back to ancient Greece where they were used in temples. This roof type has long been the architectural standard throughout Europe, as well as in America.

A gable roof is the most familiar of all roof types where two sloping sides come together at an apex and end walls form a triangular shape. It is likely that this roof type became popular because it is good at shedding water.

The term gable is typically is used when describing a front false gable. This element is commonly used on facades and porches to create visual interest in the overall design of a home.

A roof pitch is the slant of a roof. Roof pitches may vary by a home’s plan. Floor plans by Rochester Homes come in 6/12, 9/12 and 12/12. The roof pitch denotes how many inches a roof rises for every 12 inches in depth. For example, if a roof pitch was a 6/12 pitch, that means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches inward toward its peak.
